Today is Teachers Day; a day dedicated to honouring teachers and recognizing their contributions to education and development.

To celebrate, teachers across Saskatchewan were invited to participate in the Teacher Day celebrations in Regina at the Legislature. The celebrations will include a barbeque, bouncy castle and speeches from members of the government.  There will also be speeches given by teachers as well as students.

Local teacher Karen Kennedy-Allin is taking part in these celebrations and said that she is excited to celebrate Teachers Day. Kennedy-Allin recently received the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

"What I think is going to be most powerful is just standing in solidarity and in unity with thousands of other teachers," said Kennedy-Allin. "We all have a very common goal which is to do the best for our students."

She said that the day is important to bring awareness to teachers and how it has changed over the years.

"Teachers want the best for their students but sometimes they feel that resources are scarce and they're not able to do the job they want to do," Kennedy-Allin added. "I believe that there has never been a more important time to showcase what teachers do for their students."
