With the lack of rain in the southeast, many have wondered about water levels at Nickle Lake, where Weyburn draws its water from.

"Current water level is about 46 centimeters from the top level of Nickel Lake," says Shabbir Sakrani the Superintendent of the Weyburn Wate Treatment Plant. "We lost about 23 centimeters in July and about 18 centimeters in June."

Sakrani mentions that Nickel Lake normally goes down about 12 centimeters, which means we are seeing double that loss.

The residents of Weyburn have been increasing their amount of water usage which also puts a strain on numbers.

"During June and July our average daily increased by 8 million liters a day," adds Sakrani. "Our storage capabilities is 7 million so it's very hard to maintain and provide 8 million liters a day."

Sakrani adds that Weyburn is nowhere near the critical levels the city faced in January when they were down nearly a meter and a half. The runoff in the spring helped to replenish the water loss.
