It’s the best of both worlds for students seeking summer employment. A chance to work in Weyburn just for the summer.

The City of Weyburn has a number of job opportunities for high school and university students who are looking for summer employment.

City Manager Matthew Warren said the job postings went up mid-January so that all of the students who are off for the February break can have a chance to get their applications in early.

“We have ones for Public Works, Parks, Soo Line Museum, Lifeguards, Water Treatment Plant, lots of different opportunities,” said Warren. “It's a great way to maybe get your first work experience, maybe your experience working with the City. We provide lots of positive job experiences that’ll help you not only for now but in the future.”

For the more outgoing young people, there are a few opportunities that can enhance a resume as well as provide substantial experience.

One such opportunity is a six-week program that runs from July until the end of August, the Fun in the Sun program held at the Weyburn Leisure Centre.

“The FITS program is great for people who want to work with children, and one-on-one experience with kids with special needs,” he said.

Another one for the more outgoing personalities is Tour Co-ordinators at Heritage Village or at the Soo Line Historical Museum. Both tourist attractions are open seven days a week.

“It’s a great opportunity to meet people from the public, tourists from outside of the community,” he said. “For my former department [Leisure Services], it’s actually a great way to get people involved and meet the public.”

For those who prefer more hands-on work, there may be a spot for them in the Parks and Public Works and Water Treatment Plant.

“There’s always so much work,” said Warren. “We have a lot of projects going to tender right now.”

“It’s really great for our youth and young adults who want to work and get those experiences and make some money to go back to school or for opportunities,” he added.

Warren noted while most of the jobs are 16-week terms, a few are 12-week terms.

“Lots of opportunities for people to be active and get involved in the community,” he said.
