Friday the 13th, last week, could be considered a lucky day for Weyburn Comprehensive School Students at the Regional Skills Canada competition in Regina but because it was their hard work and determination that paid off so lucky may not be the right word to use. 20 participants went to the Skills competition with seven chaperoning teachers from WCS. They brought home seven medals including one Gold, three silver and three bronze.

The bronze medals were awarded to Callie Efford for Bridal Hairstyling, Oksana van Staveren for Braiding and Bridal, and Rylan Knupp for Electronics. The Silver medals were awarded to Kieran Ricard for IT Network Systems, Ruslan Edgerton for Machining and Callie Efford for Braiding and Bridal.

Leah Beam, Cosmetology Teacher, WCS, explained what her students did to prepare.

"There is a lot of preparation. We are constantly practising techniques, trying new styles."

"We are memorising procedures. Its a lot of work so we spent a lot of hours in the Cos Lab. One day over the Easter break we were in here for ten hours."

The Gold Medal for WCS was awarded to Riley Croal, Grade 12 Student, WCS, for Welding.

Rod Nieviadomy, Welding Teacher, WCS said Croal will be going to Skills Canada Nationals in Edmonton in June.

"He has been my best welder in a long time."

Croal started in welding at school in Grade 10. If he wins at Nationals, he will go on to represent Canada in the World Championships in Russia.

Margot Arnold, Entrepreneurship Teacher, WCS, went with Abby Johnson and Olivia Michel, Grade 11 students who took part in the IT Software Applications Contest. They had to show their skills in Microsoft Word, Access, Excell and PowerPoint.

"It was a great experience, both of them really enjoyed it and said now they know what to expect next year and "watch out!" ,"
