It's not often that police in Weyburn have to literally chase after a suspect who's caught in the act, but that's what happened last Thursday, February 6th, after a theft in progress was reported to the Weyburn Police Service.

Sergeant Shane St. John said the suspect was fleeing the business from which they had been stealing.

"The owner let us know where they ran to, and we located the suspect," he explained. "The business owner saw where the person went, and we don't recommend ever confronting them, but if they can see where they go or what kind of vehicle they get into, that's always a plus.

He reiterated that police do not ever recommend chasing someone down and holding them until police arrive.

"Especially in this day and age, you never know if someone has a weapon or their mental state," St. John noted. "So, we did find the person and he was arrested without further incident, but they did have some other serious charges out of Regina and they had some good charges with us, so they were held."

He said the Regina Police Service had wanted the individual to be held so they could collect them for court in Regina.

"So we've got to get a Justice of the Peace to remand that person to hold them in custody until the court appearance, the first available court appearance in Regina," he noted.

In addition to being charged in Weyburn for two counts of theft, the individual was also using someone else's identification, resulting in also being charged with Identity Fraud and, (as a consequence of identity fraud), Obstructing a Police Officer. The person will appear in court in Weyburn at a later date.
