It's not the best way to be reminded to lock up your possessions while you're swimming, but one local resident received the harsh reminder during his swim earlier this week.

Members of the Weyburn Police Service were called to the Weyburn Leisure Centre around 12:00 noon on Monday to investigate the theft of a minivan.

“A client was there swimming, and when he came back from the change room, he exited the building and found that his minivan was gone,” said Constable Jason Rutten. “He checked his pockets and noticed that the keys were missing from his pocket.”

The incident occurred at some point while the vehicle owner was swimming. The Leisure Centre has video cameras, which helped police determine two potential suspects.

“There are cameras inside the Leisure Centre, the front entrance, the lobby, and towards the change rooms,” he said. “There’s nothing inside the change rooms, of course. There is footage that covers out in the pool area also.”

From the video surveillance, police were able to pull still images of two individuals the staff said were not familiar faces at the pool.

“It appears that they were together,” said Rutten. “I think it was a male and a female, the people we’re looking to try and identify, and see if they’re any relation to the theft of the van.”

He added that the two individuals did pay for admission to the pool.

The minivan is a white 2014 Dodge Caravan with a black roof rack, license plate 681 HBP.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the van, of the identity of the individuals responsible for the theft, is asked to contact the Weyburn Police Service or Crime Stoppers by phone at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or via text to “TIP206” and your message to CRIMES (274637), or online
