There will be something to cheer about in Weyburn, and for a good solid 12 hours, to boot.

It's the 11th annual provincial cheerleading and dance championships will be held at Weyburn Comprehensive School on Saturday, March 25th.

"It will bring in teams from all over the province, and it's scheduled to run all the way from 9 a.m., probably until 9 p.m.," said organizer, Kyla Moffatt.

"Probably our furthest participants this year will be Prince Albert, North Battleford, and Charlebois (Cumberland House), which is way up north." added Moffatt. "So, those will be the furthest teams to travel, but we have teams from all over the province. We are expecting 14 hundred athletes, and about 22 hundred spectators throughout the day."

The sheer numbers of participants and spectators alike are a testament to the growing popularity of cheer and dance.

"The sport has grown exponentially in our province in the last five years." Moffatt told Discover Weyburn. "People in Weyburn just don't understand or know what it's all about. They've seen our school teams perform, but there's so much more than what we do at our school level."

Moffatt said they booked the school for the event about a year ago, to ensure it was available on the weekend in question. They then applied to the provincial organization to host the event, and was selected among the three applicants.
