After yet another train and vehicle collision at the Queen Street crossing in Weyburn on Monday, the issue of what to do about this intersection has come up again.

Dozens of collisions have occurred at the crossing between oncoming trains and vehicles crossing the tracks who have claimed they couldn't see the train or get out of the way in time.

Mayor Marcel Roy said Weyburn City Council is in talks with CP Rail and other stakeholders regarding the crossing which is proving dangerous

"Citizen safety is of the utmost importance. At this point, we have to try to make sure we look and see how we can accommodate that and considerations for the people in the area," said Roy.

CP Rail recommends closing the street to through-traffic which would cross those rails to prevent more incidents like the one Monday.

City council has been reviewing the data from CP Rail, engineers and others and, according to Roy, the crossing will be on the agenda at the next council meeting.

"I believe I'm going to be making sure that it is," said Roy when asked by Discover Weyburn if it would be discussed. Council was originally set to meet Monday evening, just hours after the collision, but the meeting was canceled as not enough counselors were in the community to make a quorum. They are at an oil show in Calgary.

"I can say that we want, as a city council and as the mayor of the city, to take deliberate action and fairly quick action before somebody gets seriously injured out there," said Roy.

He did not say what exactly the City was planning to do about the intersection yet.
