Some big changes happened at Radville Regional School earlier this month.

Prior to the changes, Radville Regional School operated as the lone high school in the community, while St. Olivier School, part of the Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division, was the only elementary school in the town. The schools operated together through cooperation and partnership between the South East Cornerstone Public School Division and the HFRCSSD.

The SECPSD was approached about having a public education available in the community for not just high school students, but those in Kindergarten through Grade 6. Director of Education for the SECPSD, Lynn Little, explained they were obligated to look at the option through provisions of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

This resulted in the school opening up for Kindergarten through Grade 6, in addition to the current enrollment in Grades 7 through 12, on November 18.

Little explained there are no changes to the catchment area for the school.

“There is an attendance area that is in place for Radville, which includes St. Olivier and the regional high school, for a number of years,” Little stated. “That remains the same.”

There is no word as to what is expected in terms of attendance for the new grades, as the SECPSD doesn’t know how many students will be making the transition from St. Olivier, which offers a faith-based education as part of the Holy Family School Division, to the public school.
