The Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture released the latest crop report Tuesday morning. The report indicates seeding is essentially complete all across Saskatchewan, including here in the southeast. Crop reporters indicated 99 percent of the crop is in the ground.

There is still some work left for some of the crops, as 96 percent of oats are planted, and 99 percent of flax, barley, canola and wheat is in the ground.

The lack of moisture has been a concern for producers, with little rainfall reported in the southeast. The most was in the Tantallon area, which saw seven millimetres.

Topsoil moistures have continued to deteriorate in the dry conditions, coupled with strong winds. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated at 24 percent adequate, with 76 percent short or very short. For hay land and pasture topsoil moisture, the numbers are direr still, at 13 percent adequate, 49 percent short and 38 percent very short.

The crop report indicated without substantial rain in the coming weeks, yields are likely to be compromised.

Crops which are slowly emerging, and are behind their normal developmental stages for this time of year. Some crops are at a stand-still, with some producers looking at delaying in-crop herbicide applications until the rain comes.
