The results of a recent survey have highlighted a common problem doctors can face. The Saskatchewan Medical Association asked 650 doctors about several issues, including burnout.

A large number answered that they felt they were at risk of burning out, and SMA President Dr. Intheran Pillay wasn't surprised.

"Burnout has always been a threat to the profession because of the way the work is conventionally structured. It's a highly stressed environment we work with. It's not a surprise at all and risk of burnout has always been there. It's the case for a lot of other professions as well," Dr. Pillay explained.

Dr. Pillay has worked in the Gravelbourg area for 24 years and understands why many doctors feel they are at risk of burnout."They recognize that they may be getting tired and showing signs of stress and so on, due to various factors within their work situation."

Dr. Pillay said they will first share the results with the SMA members, then talk with the Ministry of Health. He added that doctors believe a fragmented health system is diminishing patient care and wasting resources.

The survey also asked about team-based care, data and accountability, compensation and physician participation in the redesign of the health system.
