The Weyburn Police Service responded to a number of calls over the past seven days. They dealt with everything from telephone and email scams, to motor vehicle accidents. Police did conduct two check stops over the weekend, and there wasn’t an instance of impaired driving charges being laid during either checkstop. Here is the weekly report issued by the Weyburn Police Service.

June 6th

The Weyburn Police Service were called to a two vehicle accident on 1st Avenue. The investigation determined that a vehicle driven by a 16 year old boy had hit a parked vehicle. The driver was charged with driving without due care and attention.

A local Business reported to the Weyburn Police that they had received an email that was an attempt to defraud. The email, which indicates it is from Canada Post, requests the recipient of the email print out the label and is to take it to Canada Post to pick up a parcel. Once the label is downloaded this activates a ransomware virus which locks the computer. The sender of the email then demands money to unlock the computer. To help prevent this from occurring to you, police are advising do not open email attachments from anyone you do not know or in emails that arrive unexpected.

The Weyburn Police were called to a disturbance at a local residence. Upon arrival police found one of the occupants extremely intoxicated and being combative to other residents. Police arrested a 39 year old man for Breach of the Peace and he was lodged in cells until sober. No charges were laid.

June 7th

The Weyburn Police Service was called in the early morning hours to attend to a disturbance at a local liquor establishment. Two individuals had gotten into a pushing and shoving match and one of those involved received a minor cut to their head. The two involved were spoken to by police and then removed from the establishment. The incident remains under investigation.

The Weyburn Police Service were dispatched to a two vehicle accident at Government Road and Hill Avenue. Both vehicles were going northbound on Government Road, when the first vehicle stopped the second vehicle failed to stop and hit the first vehicle. The vehicles sustained minor damage and no one was injured. No charges were laid.

The Weyburn Police Service received a report of a possible shoplifting from a local business after staff determined items had been stolen. The investigation has determined an adult person of interest and the investigation remains ongoing.

June 8th

The Weyburn Police Service while on patrol observed an intoxicated male in the parking lot of a local liquor establishment. The individual, a 22 year old man, was extremely intoxicated and for his safety he was subsequently arrested and lodged in cells. He was released from custody when sober. No charges were laid.

The Weyburn Police Service received a report of a possible fraudulent telephone scam. The caller identified themselves as being from an RCMP Detachment and that they were collecting funds for school presentations. The investigation determined the Detachment was not collecting funds. No money was lost by the victim. Members of the public are again reminded that attempts to defraud can take many forms and you should never send money to anyone you do not know, or that you have confirmed is a legitimate charity.

The Weyburn Police also received a number of calls from individuals who had been contacted by individuals pretending to be from the CRA and demanding money for a ‘tax crime’. No one who contacted police had given out any personal information nor lost any money.

June 9th

The Weyburn Police Service received a report of a mischief. The victim advised police their vehicle had been parked in a parking lot in the 100 block of Souris Avenue and when they returned to the vehicle they found it damaged. No suspects at this time.

The Weyburn Police Service received a report of a theft under $5000 after a vehicle drove off from a local convenience store and failed to pay for gas. The suspect vehicle is described as an older Chevrolet Impala, white in color with black molding. The incident remains under investigation

The Weyburn Police Service received a complaint of an on-line fraud. The victim had entered into a rental agreement via Kijiji and then had sent a down payment to the company. The agreed to terms were not followed and the victim believes that they may have been defrauded. The incident remains under investigation.

Members of the Weyburn Police Service conducted a traffic stop focused on young drivers. Police stopped 110 vehicles, one individual was charged with driving without a license, and several other drivers were warned regarding a number of minor infractions.

A member of the Weyburn Police Service, while on patrol conducted a vehicle stop and found the driver, a 21 year old woman, to have consumed alcohol. The driver was issued a 60 day driving suspension and had the vehicle impounded for three days. No criminal charges were laid.

June 10th

The Weyburn Police Service was dispatched to a single vehicle rollover south of the City on Highway 35 near the Cemetery. The occupants of the vehicle suffered only minor injuries. The investigation determined that speed was a factor. The driver, a 17 year old girl, was charged with drive without due and attention.

A member of the Weyburn Police Service, while on patrol, observed an individual slumped over in the driver's seat of a stopped vehicle. The driver, a 27 year old man, was found to be passed out behind the wheel.  He was arrested and brought to the police station where he blew over .08.  He was charged with Impaired Care and Control and over .08. He was later released from custody and will appear in court at a later date.

The Weyburn Police Service along with members of the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS) conducted a high-visibility check stop, which was focused on reducing impaired driving. Over 600 vehicles were checked, with two traffic tickets being issued. No impaired drivers were located.
