With children returning to class Tuesday morning after the Labour Day long weekend, school zones across the city will again be full of pedestrians and traffic.

In the first three days of the school year before the weekend, the Weyburn Police Service was out to ensure everyone was following the speed limits, crossing in crosswalks and observing the no parking zones.

Sergeant Shane St. John with the WPS pointed out drivers were cautious of their surroundings in the many school zones across the city.

“For the first few days, we noticed everyone’s respecting the speed limits,” Sgt. St. John said. “It’s been very, very busy, as you are aware, in the Legacy Park area which is definitely congested when school is beginning and ending.”

The layout of the area around Legacy Park Elementary School also contributes to the safety of the school zones, Sgt. St. John suggested. There are a number of crosswalks in the area, complete with crossing lights. Recently painted crosswalks also help with the visibility and awareness for the motorists.

School zone safety isn’t just the responsibility of the motorists, though. Sgt. St. John reminded the pedestrians they are also responsible for the safety in the area.

“No matter what you’re doing, never just run out in the street; even in a crosswalk, even if those lights are going,” he added.

The WPS also had a reminder for those picking up and dropping off children at schools around the city – observe the no parking zones. Sgt. St. John said even in situations where it is even for just a moment, parking isn’t allowed in the areas that are marked off as no parking.
