SGI is suing the two bars that served a drunk driver involved in a deadly 2016 collision.

Catherine McKay was the impaired driver in the incident that killed all four members of the Van de Vorst family.

"It's very important, I mean a family of four was killed as a result of a drunk driver," said Earl Cameron, SGI Executive Vice-President. "In Saskatchewan, we know we have a drunk driving problem."

SGI wishes to hold the Saskatoon establishments accountable, as alcohol is present in almost half of all Saskatchewan's fatal car collisions.

"I think all of us, whether we be owners of establishments, family or friends of someone who's been drinking and driving need to be accountable to make sure this, like I say, doesn't happen again," added Cameron, " it happens far too frequently here in Saskatchewan."

This is the first time SGI has pursued this type of case, however, other parts of Canada are beginning to take this route in finding responsibility in liquor-serving businesses.
