So far in February, we have seen record-setting cold temperatures and what feels like more days with snow falling than not. These conditions have combined to create slick conditions on many of the streets in Weyburn.

“As good a job as the city does in sanding and that, there are times where the weather isn’t conducive to that, or the sand has worn off, and the intersections, of course, are the first things to slick up,” explained Weyburn Police Service Deputy Chief Rod Stafford.

With the slippery surfaces in some areas, the Weyburn Police Service is reminding drivers to proceed with caution on the roadways.

“Every driver is expected to drive in consideration of the road conditions and if that means they’re so slippery you can safely, only maneuver at 10 or 15 kilometres an hour, then that would be appropriate stepped to be driving at,” Stafford added.

In their weekly release, the Weyburn Police Service highlighted you can still receive a ticket even if you are driving under the posted speed limit if you aren’t driving at a speed which fits the road conditions.

“If somebody steps off the curb or a child runs out from a school zone, or any other thing, you still have to be able to react and stop your vehicle safely without risk of skidding and sliding on the ice.”
