The possibility of a strike looms over the main rail line in southeast Saskatchewan. The Teamsters, which represents conductors and engineers, formally submitted a 72-hour strike notice to Canadian Pacific Railway today. The deadline for the union to reach a deal with the railway is 12:10 a.m. Saturday morning.

The union is citing a lack of progress at the negotiating table, although talks are set to resume today.

Employees voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action earlier this month. 94.2 percent of the ballots cast were in favour of walking off the job.

There is no word at this time what impact the strike would have in Weyburn. The city is served by CP Rail, as are the inland terminals on the edges of the city.

The second union at CP Rail, for signal maintainers, is also in a strike position, but no formal notice of strike action has been submitted at this time.
