Norovirus has been identified as the cause of a number of cases of nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting in the province.

"Norovirus is a type of virus that affects the intestinal system," explained Doctor David Torr, Consulting Medical Health Officer for the Saskatchewan Health Authority. "It gives very, very rapid onset of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, and this goes on for like 24 to 48 hours for most people. It can take longer for some."

Doctor Torr said that Norovirus should not be confused with Influenza. While Norovirus presents intestinal-related symptoms, Influenza is a respiratory illness. He added that Saskatchewan is just beginning flu season and there has been a spike of cases across the province.

Torr suggested that anyone sick with either illness should stay home and practice frequent and thorough hand washing with soap and hot water. Norovirus is highly contagious and Torr said hand sanitizers are not effective in killing the virus.
