This week, the Weyburn branch of the Farm Credit Canada has been collecting brown paper bags filled with food as donations to the Weyburn Food Bank, which is run by the Weyburn corps of The Salvation Army.

"The collection went great. In the Weyburn area, we collected more than we did last year so I would consider that a success," explained Jill Becker, Relationship Management Associate, Farm Credit Canada.

Becker said it is estimated they have collected over 28,500 meals for the Weyburn and Estevan Foodbanks.

The average year collection size is around 20,000 meals.

"For the Weyburn Foodbank we collected from the rural towns of Oungre, Gladmar and Radville, as well as all of the schools in Weyburn and some businesses in the Weyburn area," said Becker.

"FCC is a part of this just because I think its great to give back to the people in need in the community, and also We're part of an industry that feeds the world. So it just feels great to be able to do something different and be able to give back to people in need," explained Becker when asked, why the FCC gets involved in this collection for the Food Bank each year.

"I would just like to thank all of the schools in the rural communities as well as the businesses in schools in Weyburn and Estevan and all of the people that donated either food or money to help us raise this many meals for the people that are in need in the community," added Becker.

The Food Bank relies on donations of food, gift cards and money throughout the year to feed families and individuals in need.

"Wonderful, it is just amazing how the community comes together when there's a big event like this, it just blows me away every time," expressed Jennifer Lorinczy, Community Ministries Coordinator for the Salvation Army.

Lorinczy is grateful for the timing of the support from Farm Credit Canada as the busy Christmas season approaches.

"It will be enough food to get us through the Fall, hopefully into the New Year through our Christmas season. That's what we needed."

Lorinczy also appreciates the support from the community of Weyburn and mentioned the groups that partnered with FCC.

Weyburn Red Wings Cade Kowalski, Garrett Szeremley and Jessie Young volunteered to help bring the bags and boxes of food into the Salvation Army building and organise food into the correct boxes before they took them into the Food Bank, at the back of the Salvation Army building.
