With heat expected to reach the mid to high thirties throughout southern Saskatchewan this week, Weyburn residents will have to try and beat the heat.

Jonathan Tremblay with SaskPower has some tips for saving power during the heat wave.

“Make sure appliances, televisions or lights aren’t turned on when there’s no one is in the house. It goes without saying, but it’s something I know I have to remind myself to do. Also enjoy the weather, use your barbecue rather than your oven or stove top. That’s another source of a lot of power consumption,” he noted.

Tremblay said just a few small changes can make a big difference and can help avoid a large power bill.

“The air conditioning in your home, it takes a lot of power. It’s important, if you do have a programmable one, be careful to at least turn it off when no one is in the home. That can make a huge difference at the end of the month,” he added.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the thirties for up to a week, with the potential for some heat records to be broken.

Tremblay believes it's important to have your air conditioner serviced regularly to ensure it’s working to the best of its abilities.

“When its been years and years that it hasn’t been serviced, it becomes inefficient and uses more power then it should. A quick call to an inspector or a technician to have it repaired could have it running more efficiently with less electricity,” Tremblay said.

Environment Canada has a special weather statement in effect for the Weyburn area, as well as much of southern Saskatchewan. A heat warning is expected to be issued by the end of the week.
