The Weyburn Fire department responded to a fire at Mryglod Steel and Metals last night.

Wednesday evenings are training evenings for the Fire Department.

A crew took a fire truck out as part of their training.

"They're the ones that spotted the fire, they had taken a truck out to go to our training centre, just around the block and saw the flames," explained Chief Simon Almond, Weyburn Fire Department.

"We made an immediate response right away, I assumed command myself."

"We had a significant fire of wire, we are not sure if it was copper or aluminum or a mixture of both, coated in plastic. Those were being recycled and stored there."

Chief Almond said there was a pile of wire that was 100 feet long, 40 feet deep and 40 feet high.

"There was a significant amount of smoke and a significant amount of flames. It was a very hot fire."

The fire was extinguished with help from Mryglod staff with the use of their grappling hook.

"Before we could get that anywhere near, we had to knock the fire down considerably just to dissipate the heat for the truck to get there."

The scene was finally cleared by 1:30 am Thursday morning.

The fire is under investigation by Chief Almond and will be talking with the Fire Commissioner's office and Mryglod staff.

Chief Almond is not suspecting anything suspicious. The gate was locked and it is not a typical area of Weyburn where children are playing.

Chief Almond and the Weyburn Fire Department would like to remind the public the importance of the Fire Department and Emergency services to have space to do their job.

"We were hampered a little bit last night by people wanting to have a look at this fire."

"There really is no reason for people to look, I just wish they would stay away. We will release information as best as we can as fast as we can," added Chief Almond.

We will keep you updated as more information becomes available from the investigation.
