Named for the man who was behind the creation of the Weyburn Arts Council, the 2018 James Weir People’s Choice Award is beginning to wrap up. Well, at least the voting period is.

The final ballots for who Weyburn wants to see win the award will be cast today at the Allie Griffin Art Gallery. In all, there are 37 entries this year, the most in the history of the award.

When the voting is done, the entries won’t be coming down, though. Regan Lanning, the curator for the city of Weyburn, explained she still has a bit of work to do before the winner is unveiled at the gala next week.

“I will be gathering up the last of the ballots, and I’ll also be changing out the title cards to include the artists’ names,” Lanning said. “If you were in earlier, and you voted for a piece, and you were wondering who did it, come back in the next week and you will be able to see who the artists are.”

The votes will be counted, and the winner announced at the gala held at the Allie Griffin Art Gallery.

“The reception for the James Weir People’s Choice will be on February 22nd, at seven o’clock,” Lanning added. “It is open to the public; it is free to attend.

This year is the 34th edition of the annual award.
