This week, from October 14 through tomorrow, has been Education Week in Saskatchewan.

In fact, it’s a tradition the province has maintained for more than 30 years. Each year, a full week is designated to celebrate student success and recognize the tireless work and dedication of education professionals throughout the province.

The theme for Education Week this year is ‘A World of Learning for Every Student’, which acknowledges the numerous diverse ways students are able to go about their learning in this rapidly changing world.

Education Week also highlights the important roles of educators in broadening the horizons and enriching the lives of the students. One of those educators is Ryan Fowler, Principal of Weyburn Comprehensive School.

Fowler said that for his school, this year’s theme is quite fitting.

“I think WCS embodies that on a daily basis in all of our programming that we offer to all of our students from Grades 7 to 12, engaging students in their academics, engaging students in our school, whether it is through a club, or an activity, or a sport or a music production, offering opportunities for students to learn, not only in the academic classroom, but also through being part of a larger community that is Weyburn Comprehensive School,” said Fowler.

WCS has grown from facilitating Grades 10 through 12 to now also accommodating Grades 7 through 9 as well. This is the third school year that all six grades have been under one roof, for a total of 920 students.

“I think it’s a continual exciting place to work every day,” said Fowler. “With Grades 7 to 12 being here, there’s always something new and exciting happening. Students continue to see lots of opportunities.”

He said the size of the school lends itself to more opportunities for the students.

“We also have a large staff that is able to provide learning opportunities, whether it be through the classroom or through extra-curricular activities,” he said. “We can hopefully provide something for every student to take part in and be a member of our community.”

“We continue to grow and become one school, as a Grade 7 to 12 school,” he added.

Some of the activities held at the school for Education Week included a Muffin Morning Meet and Greet for staff of WCS and parents to chat over breakfast. Students were also invited to bring a parent to lunch on Wednesday.
