The reaction is coming in from a number of quarters about the new measures introduced by the provincial government Thursday that are aimed at limiting the spread of COVID-19.

Here in Weyburn, executive director of the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce, Larry Heggs feels the decision to re-instate the masking mandates and to institute a proof of vaccination or negative COVID test in October was something that was inevitable.

“These measures are targeted and timely,” Heggs told Discover Weyburn. “Absolutely businesses will be affected, but the resilience and capability of our entrepreneurs that make up this local community and this business sector have proven their ability to adapt over these last 20 months.”

Heggs noted the reinstatement of public health measures is an inconvenience, but one that is doing what’s needed to move the needle in terms of cases of COVID-19. He did point out the government didn’t implement anything like gathering size limits, which would have had a number of impacts on businesses.

Overall, though, he isn’t upset about the decision that was made.

“If that’s what we need to move it forward, I guess we need to be behind that,” Heggs said. “I would expect that businesses would wish for a speedy uptake in vaccines and that the rate would go up so that we can continue to push the economy forward.”
