What's better on Valentine's Day than some heart-warming love stories?

While it's not ‘love at first sight’ for every couple, some do know when they've found their ‘one’.

Reverend Cam Weber and his wife Gail have been married 40 years this November. They met at a youth group party in 1978. Gail Weber shared how she knew Cam was going to be the love of her life.

“There was this gentle, kind, compassionate, caring side of this guy that the other two guys [I dated] didn't show,” she said. “I knew in my heart that he was the one for me, and it took actually having a little breakup for about three weeks for him to realize that I was the one for him. So we got back together and the rest, as they say, is history.”

But every love story has its highs and lows, and some challenges are so heavy, they can be the end of any marriage. Weber shared on just such a life-altering tragedy.

“The real big one that could have destroyed our marriage was we lost our son in 2002 to suicide, and you could play that blame game, or any multitude of things could have destroyed our marriage, but because we have God in our marriage, we were able to turn to God and our Godly friends to really help us through that time.”

She said prior to the loss of their son, they had been drifting apart, as many couples do.

“I kind of felt that our relationship was dying, and before we lost our son, I felt that we were probably going to separate, and when he passed away, we grew closer and closer,” she shared. “It was really amazing how things turned around but it made us want to work on things more.”

They will celebrate 40 years of marriage this year.

“We're still together and married,” said Weber. “Do we still have hurdles? Of course. I think every marriage and every relationship has hurdles and it's all what you do with it. It's whether you're going to focus on what happened and allow it to destroy your relationship, or are you going to focus on, 'this happened. We need to deal with it. Let's work together.'”

She shared some keys to making love last.

“You get to know each other, know what you like and what you don't like. That's a real key to our relationship,” she said. “For us, it's not taking one another for granted and taking time out for each other and having date night or a weekend away and just enjoying each other's time together.”

She added it also helps to not argue when somebody's driving.

“If you believe in your relationships, you need to fight for them,” she urged. “You need to give it everything you have. It's not this 50 / 50 that people will say, it's 100 per cent, 100 per cent. If you've got two willing partners to give it their all and you love each other and you know, even if there's just that little spark there, that is worth fighting for."

The following story was shared anonymously from a Weyburn couple who are celebrating 58 years this summer.

“We met at university,” said the wife. “I needed a ride from a dance, he was taking my best friend home. The rest is history!”

“We balance each other out in strengths and personality, can’t imagine not being here with him! Not too many differences of opinion these days,” she said. “Why are we still together? I told my niece years ago: if he makes your heart sing he is the one! He is my one!”

Another Weyburn couple, Landon and Bree Kinney, who aren’t yet even in their 40s, have been together 24 years.

“We met at the mall,” said Landon Kinney. “I actually thought she was another girl, so I ended up saying ‘hi’, thinking I had actually met her before, but it was the girl next to her in the yearbook from the same school, so it kinda made sense.”

“We ended up getting pictures with Santa the day we met and we still have the picture to this day,” said Kinney.

As they were 15 years old at the time, Kinney said Bree was with a friend and that his own friend had somehow called 'dibs' on Bree. After it didn’t work out with her friend, Landon ended up calling Bree.

“We fell in love ASAP, and we snuck out together days later at night and ended up kissing,” he said. “I asked her out, been together ever since, that was 24 years ago when we were 15.”

The Kinneys have been married 11 years this year. Landon shared his advice for a lasting relationship.

“Stop thinking the grass is greener on the other side,” he said. “Regardless of what side you’re on, you still have to mow the grass!”

“Just remember how good it was and it still can be if you put in the work,” he continued. “That person you married, or are committed to, picked you out of everyone on the planet. Respect that and cherish it because its amazing to be loved like that.”

Weyburn’s Bikram Sandhu of Swaad Indian Restaurant Weyburn shares how he met his wife in 2011.

“I flew from Canada to India to get married,” he said. “I met my wife only once before marriage for only 10 to 15 minutes! She and her parents came to my sister’s house before the marriage date and I met Jaspreet in person for a few minutes. We were married in less than 11 hours after our first meeting, next day of me landing in India!”

He said his sister knew Jaspreet’s family and arranged their marriage with parents from both sides.

“We talked over the phone for a couple of months before marriage and figured we can spend rest of our lives together,” said Sandhu. “After marriage, we spent together about two weeks in India and I had to come back to Canada due to work. It took Jaspreet one year to get Canadian Visa. During that time, our relationship was once again over the phone only.”

He added they are now happily married and have two wonderful sons.
