The awards were presented Monday night in Toronto.

The credit union received an award for Brand and Brand Building, and the Award for Business Building and Acquisition.

Tana Torkelson is the vice president of marketing with Weyburn Credit Union. She explained the award for the brand building was for their second annual CU Days campaign.

“For 12 days leading up to Credit Union day, we run giveaways, just random acts of kindness, and different things within the community,” she said. “We all put on our purple shirts, and are very visible, and the reason we do that is one, to thank our loyal members, and to spread the credit union story.”

The work on the brand building campaign assisted them with achieving their second award for business building and acquisition. Torkelson points out in recent years, for most of the country, membership in credit unions has been declining. This hasn’t been the case in Weyburn.

“We actually reversed that trend, and have seen some really great growth numbers, and people coming to the credit union, because they see the benefit of a credit union, and that we do things differently, and that we are a meaningful and relevant alternative to other financial institutions.”

Last year, the Weyburn Credit Union received awards for its rebrand, website, and a shoestring marketing campaign.
