Weyburn fire services members doing more than saving lives over the weekend... they were also working toward making a better Christmas for some local families.

They had a fire truck at the Canadian Tire store in Weyburn on Saturday, collecting toys and around $400 in donations for the Family Place.

Assistant Executive Director for the Family Place, Judy Lumb, shared what happens with the toys.

"Sometimes a family will come in and if we know they're struggling, we'll let them go in and pick what they want to wrap up for themselves, or we use them to sponsor children as well," she explained.

She said this is the fourth year the Fire Fighters have done this for them.

"They do get some cash donations as well, the majority is toys but some people will just give some cash," she noted. "We actually have different organizations or individuals who will sponsor a family at Christmas, so we've done it that way as well."

She said the Fire Fighers will be presenting them with the toys and donations on Friday.
