A 34-year-old Weyburn man was in provincial court this morning, facing charges of impaired driving after a deadly accident near Southey on the weekend.

Wade Michael Ganje is facing seven charges after one woman died and three others were injured in a collision on Highway 6 on Saturday.

Police said around 6 p.m., a northbound truck collided with a southbound car at the Township Road 20 Junction.

The 40-year-old woman passenger from Cupar was pronounced dead at the scene and three others in the car were taken to hospital in Regina with non-life threatening injuries.

Ganje's charges include impaired driving causing death, impaired operation over .08 causing death, impaired operation causing bodily harm, impaired operation over .08 causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and failing to stop.

Ganje's first court appearance was set for Monday at 9:30 a.m. in Regina Provincial Court.

Meanwhile, it appears the message about drinking and driving still isn't getting through in Saskatchewan.

According to Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI), last month there were 353 impaired driving charges compared with 308 in December, 2015.

Kelly Brinkworth of SGI is disappointed with the figures.

"Especially when there were different options provided by SGI and our partners, like Ding In the New Year, and Operation RedNose, some of those free transportation options for people, and then even police were out there during the holiday season, during a great job on enforcement," she said.

"It's just sad to see that people are still making those poor decisions."

Tougher drinking and driving laws went into effect at the beginning of the year. Brinkworth hopes that has more of an effect on the problem.
