Weyburn continues to be a growing community on the prairies, although perhaps not as quickly as what some anticipated. According to the 2016 Census, Weyburn’s population was 10,870. This is an increase of 386 from the 2011 Census, but doesn’t factor in any growth which may have occurred in the community since May of last year, when the Census was compiled.

Weyburn mayor Marcel Roy, who is attending the SUMA convention in Saskatoon, was pleased to hear the news Weyburn is growing, and looks forward to the continued growth of the community in the future.

The numbers were released as part of the first dataset compiled from the 2016 Census. It deals primarily with population, growth, and dwellings in a community. There are six more data sets to be released throughout the year.

Some communities in the Weyburn area didn’t see growth over the past five years. McTaggart had their population shrink, albeit by just four, to 121. Milestone, on the other hand, had it’s population increase by more than 13 per cent to 699. Midale also saw moderate growth, to 604. Radville, though, with a surprising decline, as they fell by more than six per cent to 807.

Provincially, the population according to the Census is 1,098,352, and increase of 6.3 per cent from 2011. The national population is 35,151,728.
