It may not be the coldest February in Weyburn's history but it is the coldest many of us can remember.

Meteorologist with Environment Canada Terri Lang said the mean temperature for Weyburn last month was -23.3 degrees Celsius, which is the coldest February their records show since 1953.

"We did find colder months before 1953 but the issue with the data is it's just too messy to believe it, put it that way," shared Lang.

One of those coldest February's Lang referred to was back in 1936, when records indicate it may have had a mean, or average, temperature of -26.8 degrees. She said previous February's that came close to beating the record set this year include mean temperatures of -20.5 in 1979 and -19.3 in 2014.

With the first few days of March under an extreme cold warning, Weyburnites are hopeful this month will not be like the last. Although there tend to be weather changes in March, Lang gave no credence to the expression that if March comes in like a lion it will go out like a lamb, stating it is just an old wive's tale. The forecast, however, does indicate a slight warm-up is on the way, with a daily high of -9 expected for Tuesday.
