One of the concerns brought to city council last week was in regards to Weyburn's street lights.

"Concern about a number of lights in the downtown area that were not working and getting the assistant engineer to do some research we have identified that this has been a problem according to Sask Power for some five to six years," says Weyburn City Manager, Roy Hardy.

There have been ongoing discussions with Sask Power, however, there is still no firm understanding of why the street lights aren't working. It has been confirmed that the underground power source has become unreliable.

"This is going to take time but it has to fit into the agenda of what we're going to do because it also takes money," says Weyburn Councillor, Dick Michel.

It also has to be decided whether the street lights will be owned by the City or Sask Power.

It is also questioned whether the lights should be replaced in their entirety. One suggestion would be to switch to LED bulbs which run more efficiently and save money. However, at this time, Sask Power does not offer LED lights.

"I don't think we want to look at a block or two blocks or three blocks, I think we want to have a discussion about a scope then," says Weyburn Councillor, Jeff Richards.

City council understands that this will be a large project and are planning to prioritize and make the best decisions. The hope is to pair this work with other related projects such as sidewalk work or drainage/gutter work.
