A Weyburn woman and her boyfriend are in the hospital, after surviving a mudslide in B.C. on the long weekend.

Sheri Niemegeers and her boyfriend Gabe Rosescu, who is from Regina, were driving to Nelson, B.C. Thursday when their vehicle was caught up in a landslide caused by recent rains in the area.

“We both said at once, ‘oh my god, there’s a tree',” described Niemegeers of the experience. “That’s pretty much the last that I remember until we were in the car after we had stopped on the side of the hill on the bank.”

The vehicle was swept off the highway, and down a cliff, landing on trees toppled by the incident.

“I could hear people above us and I could hear water below us,” Niemegeers said. “So I knew we had to go up instead of down and as fast as we could, because I didn’t know how long the tree was going to hold us.”

A passing motorist saw the landslide, and stopped traffic, then checked to see if anyone was caught up in the slide. The firefighter, who happened to be from Saskatchewan as well, heard the calls for help from the pair and helped them to safety.

Niemegeers was taken to hospital in Trail, B.C. with a broken sternum and ankle.

Rosescu is in hospital in Kelowna with a number of severe head injuries. He is in serious but stable condition.

“He has more of the head trauma issues, and they’re waiting for the swelling to go down so the plastic surgeon can do the surgery," explained Niemegeers. "So hopefully he’s having that later today or tomorrow morning.”

A Go Fund Me page has been set up for the couple. It is already at the $20,000 mark.

Niemegeers says she is thankful for all the support and well wishes from her friends and family here in the Weyburn area.
