For the Weyburn Youth Centre, it’s all about the kids. While the TAGS welcomes all youth to come and enjoy the facility, in recent months the organization has also been reaching out and teaming up with other aspects of the community.

“We've got a couple of partners that we're partnering with,” said Executive Director Brian Hopfe. “One is the high school, Weyburn Comprehensive School. We do a program called the Adventure club with them.”

The Adventure Club is formerly known as Bros Club, but the name has been changed to reflect the additional welcoming of girls and to more aptly reflect the nature of their program.

“That is usually about every second Wednesday, sometimes more often, where we do different programs with the students, boys and girls, from Grade Seven to Grade 12 there,” he said.

He said Comp students can follow the announcements at the school for more information, or they can follow the WYC’s web page.

Hopfe said that most recently the group has taken a trip to Regina where they played laser tag and went out for pizza. They also go swimming from time to time and do other activities to engage the groups of up to 30 kids who regularly attend the group.

“We've also joined as partners with the Weyburn Public Library, doing different events with them, working with the kids, trying to be there for the kids,” he said, noting the next event for the partnership is on the March 16th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at TAGS when they will hold the Nerf Wars.

“On the 27th of April, we will be doing 3D printing with the library at the library, and the students will have a choice between five or six different things that we could print off 3D for them and then we'll paint them and all that kind of stuff too,” said Hopfe.

He said the Weyburn Youth Centre is open every Friday and Saturday night from 7:00 to 10:30 p.m.

“Other than, like if it's minus 25, we've been closing down because we don't think it's good for the kids to be out wandering around in the cold,” he explained.

Hopfe said young people have plenty of options for things to do within the TAGS facility, including games and sports, but the outreach through the school and the library allow for more options to make sure they know they’re welcomed, wanted and, of course, keeping busy.
