Those interested in making a difference within the community should consider applying for the Weyburn Youth Council.

The Weyburn Youth Council is made up of five Weyburn Comprehensive School students from grades 10-12 and the deadline to apply for the 2021-22 council term is coming up on Friday, September 10.

"What we do here is we engage a group of youth and we put together a youth council and they amongst themselves appoint a youth mayor," explained Jeff Richards, Councilor with the City of Weyburn. "What we as a council do with this is we take the opportunity to learn from them. They're very influential at council meetings. They have agenda items that oftentimes are different than what council has so they can influence the council's agenda with their own agenda."

Two of the council members from last year's Youth Council will be returning but there will still be three open spots for any other youth that meet the criteria.

"So applications will be closing here in a couple of days so we encourage everybody that's interested to take that opportunity and submit an application," Richards expressed. "If anyone has trouble finding the application forms I would just say to pop into City Hall and they'll help you get the applications as well."

Below you can listen to Jeff Richards explaining what all of the benefits are for teens to join the Weyburn Youth Council.
