This past Thursday was World Rabies Day, just days after Souris School reported a bat sighting at their playground. The City of Weyburn is still on the lookout for the bat.

"The reason we want the bat, this particular bat, and potential history of contact is because of the possibility that exists with rabies," says Dr Lanre Medu, Medical Officer with the Sun Country Health Region. "Ideally with if we found the bat we would have had the bat sent for testing to be absolutely certain that it was not a rabies bat."

With bat's carrying many dangerous diseases such as rabies it is important to know what to do if you come across a bat.

"If you see a bat lying on the floor do not touch it, do not pick it up, they may look cuddly they make look cute animals but they could carry significant disease," says Medu.

If you absolutely have to deal with a bat it is important to wear the proper gear such as thick gloves. Bat bites can be indiscernible or unnoticeable so if you have any contact with a bat it is important to contact your local health region. If you see a bat that needs attention you can call the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Saskatchewan.
