A posted speed limit of 50 km/h didn't stop one Manitoba driver from going 102 km/h in Weyburn on Saturday. The driver was stopped by members of the Weyburn Police Service, however, and he was subsequently arrested and charged with Impaired Driving and Driving While Over .08.

The driver's license was suspended indefinitely, and the vehicle he was driving was seized for 30 days. He also received $1,050 in fines.

“In some cases, speed alone can constitute a case for dangerous driving under the criminal code,” said Deputy Chief Rod Stafford. “In all cases, it’s certainly an exceptionally expensive speeding ticket and points on your abstract and safe driver rewards and, of course, it just complicates things ten-fold when you’re also found to be impaired and driving at those speeds in the city.”

Stafford noted that drivers do not often get caught going twice the speed limit in Weyburn, which is a good thing, considering the true cost of such a thoughtless crime.

“Aside from all of the potential criminal charges and just the increased danger to causing a collision or being involved in a collision at those speeds, and the amount of damage that would result in a collision at those speeds, all factors into it and adds to the non-monetary things that people don’t often think of,” he said.
