Over the past week, the Weyburn Police Service received a number of reports of theft in the city. The items taken varied, and it is not known if any of the incidents were connected.

The first theft the police were called about happened last Tuesday. Officers began the investigation into the theft of a stolen bicycle. It is described as a matte black Wethepeople Arcade BMX 20-inch, with neo-chrome spokes and a headset.

Thursday, police were called about a break, enter and theft which had occurred over the previous few days. Items reported stolen included a television, a PlayStation 3, a printer and a Nixon watch. This was followed up by the report of two more thefts on Sunday.

The first report Sunday was about the theft of a Traeger BBQ from the 200-block of 14th Street. The other was the theft of a number of items from a location on the 800-block of 3rd Street SE. The items reported stolen there include a bow and arrows, a water cooler, a 20L gas can and a Stanley ratchet set.

The investigations into these thefts are ongoing.

Weyburn Police Service Deputy Chief Rod Stafford explained, while it may not be the case in these situations, often times theft is a crime of opportunity.

“Somebody may just be going, knock on the door, find out nobody's home, no one comes to the door, so they try the doorknob,” Stafford said. “If it’s locked they may move on. If it’s not locked, well, there’s their opportunity.”

Other times for stolen items such as bicycles, often, it is when a bicycle is left unattended for any reason. It is recommended for bicycles be locked to prevent their theft.
