The 18U AA Weyburn Beavers got their 2022 season started Sunday, as they entertained the Parkland Expos for a pair of games at Tom Laing Park.

The Beavers would get the first win of the season in the first game of the doubleheader, winning 11-0 in six innings. The Expos would get the upper hand in the second game, holding off a late rally to win 8-7.

In the first game of the day, Ben Manning would help lead the way with two RBI for Weyburn, with Ryker Watt, Wyatt Godlonton and Brasen Sim also knocking in runs. Stolen bases were also key for the victory, with Watt stealing three bags, with Manning and Walker Doud also stealing bases.

On the mound, Karston Geiger got things done, allowing three hits over three innings while striking out four to earn the win on the mound. Sam Mallory pitched in relief, going three innings and striking out four on 27 pitches.

In the second game of the day, the Expos built up an early lead, and despite a rally by Weyburn to tie the game in the seventh inning, went on to win by the 8-7 final.

Watt would lead the way at the plate for the Beavers with three RBI on two hits. Manning added two more RBI himself. Also driving in runs were Seth Deis and Sam Mallory.

The Beavers also displayed strong skills again on the basepath, with the team stealing five bases in total – two by Manning, with Dallen Oxelgren, Geiger and Godlonton stealing bases as well.

On the mound, Manning was tagged with the loss. In 1 2/3 innings of work in relief, he struck out three but had one unearned run scored against him for the Expos to take the lead. Watt had the start on the mound, striking out seven and allowing one earned run in four innings. Seth Deis pitched for 2/3 of an inning but gave up four earned runs.

The 18U AA Beavers will be back in action on Tuesday. They host the Lumsden Cubs at Tom Laing Park.
