The Weyburn Lacrosse Association hit the ground running this year and they don't plan on slowing down any time soon!!

"We're really excited for what we have going on for the 2020 season," expressed Randy Labrecque, President of the Weyburn Lacrosse Association. "One of the first things that we're doing this year is called the Little Thrashers Academy. This academy is really geared towards introduction of the sport. The two age groups that we are offering are five and under and another for eight and under. And we're gonna run forty five minute sessions one day a week from now into March at Haig School."

The Little Thrashers camp will be run Wednesdays from January 29th through March 25th.

"Another thing we're doing," added Labrecque. "We're bringing Jeff Shattler from the Saskatchewan Rush back with his Shattler Lacrosse Academy. That's gonna be for ages nine to seventeen years old. We're going to have ten hour and a half sessions with Jeff out at the Weyburn Comp's Eagle's gym. So we are super pumped for that and that they have opened their doors for us in allowing us to really push forward with a lot of our development."

The Shattler Lacrosse Academy will run March 24, 30 & April 1, 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23, 28.

We had the opportunity to chat with Jeff Shattler in the studio. Here is the full conversation about his Shattler Academy, his life, the Saskatchewan Rush and the sport of lacrosse.

What about the regular lacrosse season?

"Our regular club season for all of our age groups will be kicking off at the end of April and typically runs right through to June," explained Labrecque. "And that starts at the age of three. They're called Paper Weights. We're gonna put three and four-year-olds on the floor for forty five minute sessions and just start the ball rolling there."

Looking for an incentive to register early?

"Part of our registration being open early is we are introducing early bird registration prizes," told Labrecque. "Anybody that registers for the regular season between now and February 17th is going to be entered into a draw. The grand prize for the draw will be to represent the Weyburn Thrashers up at the Saskatchewan Rush LAX game on February 29th. We're going to draw a name and that player is going to be able to run out with a Rush player at that game. The entrant has to be between five and twelve, they have to be okay with being in front of fifteen thousand plus people at the start of the opening ceremonies of the Rush lacrosse game, and be able to be a little bit independent from mom and dad. But we'll have lots of great volunteers there that will be able to take care of the kids. And along with that in our early bird draw we have a Canadian lacrosse hoodie that we're giving away as well as a Saskatchewan Rush jersey that's been signed by the 2019 team and two Thrashers hoodies that were signed by the 2018 Saskatchewan Rush roster as well. So we have lots of great prizes for folks that register early."

And if you plan on going to any Rush games, there is a simple way for you to support the Weyburn Lacrosse Association when you purchase your tickets.

"So the way this works, you can go onto our website or our Facebook page and find the ticket link," Labrecque told. "You can select the Weyburn Lacrosse Association as the recipient and then each ticket that is sold through our link will send us a percentage of the ticket price. It's just a great fundraising opportunity for us where you can go enjoy the Rush games while supporting your local lacrosse association."

Are you looking for casual all ages drop-in lacrosse sessions?

"We're inviting everybody out to come try lacrosse on Sunday afternoons," expressed Labrecque excitedly. "We will be at Saint Dominic School from two to five in the afternoons doing casual drop-in lacrosse for the public. These sessions are welcome to anybody that wants to try lacrosse. We only ask that you bring a helmet, some gloves and a stick. If you don't have a stick we always have lots of extras. We also ask that anyone who comes to participate brings five dollars. We've been collecting funds at our sessions to donate back to the Weyburn Mental Health Association when we're all finished at the end of March. We have our certified coaches that are there all the time. So it's safe and ready to roll for anybody that wants to pop by."
