Residents of the 800 block of Brimacombe Drive were pleasantly surprised yesterday when they noticed a bunch of school kids clearing their sidewalks and driveways.

Many residents offered their appreciation to these students on social media, not knowing who they were or what they were up to.

Well, those students were the Grade 6 class at Assiniboia Park Elementary School, lead by teacher Kevin Butz.

"We started this last year as a way to give back to the APES Community," mentioned Kevin. "The idea actually came from another elementary school in town that has a Random Acts of Kindness Club. We thought it would be a great way to teach our students the importance of doing something just because it was a good thing to do."

With yesterday's snowfall, they had the perfect chance.

"We purchased a number of shovels at the end of last winter and were waiting patiently for the opportunity to help those that needed it."

According to the social media posts, students did more than just help those who needed it by shoveling every sidewalk and drive-way on the block.

"My grade six students did a fantastic job yesterday and I was and am extremely proud of them," said Butz. "They worked extremely hard and didn't really want to stop. In fact, at lunchtime, they showed up at the staff room wanting to get the shovels out of the shed so they could clear the snow off the playground basketball court."

With more and more schools incorporating random acts of kindness, Kevin summed up the whole idea behind it.

"Kids will do the right thing if you give them the chance to."
