A retrospective exhibition of works by the late Eltje Degenhart is on display now at the Weyburn Art Gallery, and will be until the end of December, 2023.

However, an opportunity to get together with other artists and art appreciators is coming up soon that will enhance the experience of taking in the exhibition.

Arts Coordinator with the Weyburn Arts Council and City Curator Regan Lanning said a reception being held on Thursday, October 12th at 7:00 p.m. will be the final event for Culture Days in Weyburn.

“If you're at Weyburn local, if you've been here for a lot of years, you will know who Eltje Degenhart was,” she noted. “He was the art teacher at the Comprehensive for a generation, and his efforts and the efforts of other arts educators in Weyburn have changed the art ecosystem in Weyburn.”

“People, I find, here, are less intimidated by art than they are in other communities, or they'll walk into the gallery, and if they don't get it, they'll freely express that they don't get it.”

Lanning said this gives her the opportunity to step in and to help out with understanding the works in a given exhibit.

“Whereas in other communities, maybe they don't express it, they don't get it, and they just they kind of keep that to themselves.”

She said the teacher's effect also extends to the turnouts they get at local art events.

“I feel that that's because the quality of our arts education for so many years kind of demystified and took out that intimidation that some people face when dealing with art.”

The Weyburn Art Gallery is located inside of the Credit Union Spark Centre, and is free to the public to view during regular Spark Centre hours.
