For the first time since the Weyburn Beavers began to play in the WMBL, they have swept the Medicine Hat Mavericks in the season series. They picked up a 15-2 win at Tom Laing Park last night. The game saw Cam Williams hit his first home run in three seasons with the Beavers. The first baseman added two more RBI, while Luis Jimenez, Ulysses Fluellen, and Ty Scott batted in two runs each.

The Beavers started the scoring in the first inning, when they went through the entire batting order, putting five runs on the board. The runs included the solo blast by Williams, which flew over the fence in left-center field.

“I could tell it was gone as soon as it left the bat,” Williams said about the shot. He has had a few home runs in college but had yet to put one over the fence in the WMBL.

The Beavers added to the lead in the second inning with Fluellen’s fourth homer of the year. The towering two-run shot ended the night for Medicine Hat’s starting pitcher Barry Caine. He went 1 ⅔ innings, giving up seven earned runs, facing thirteen batters.

The two teams exchanged runs in the third, and top of the fourth, as Medicine Hat closed the gap to just six runs. It would be the closest the Mavericks would get.

Thompson thought Beavers starting pitcher Ryan Johnson should have been called for a balk on a successful pick-off attempt to end the top of the inning.

Johnson had a solid performance on the mound. He went 5 ⅓ innings, giving up two runs and striking out seven. Beau Rabedeaux, Cody Pamperin, Connor Starke and Eric Evans finished the game off for the Beavers.

The sixth inning of the game took nearly an hour to complete, as the Beavers once again went through the entire batting order while putting five more runs on the board. The inning also saw Medicine Hat catcher Jacob Leal leave the game with an injury. There was no word on his status immediately following the game.

Two more runs for the Beavers in the seventh round out the scoring, as the Beavers put up their biggest run total of the 2017 season.

The win moves the Beavers to within three games of the Regina Red Sox and Swift Current 57’s, who are tied for first in the WMBL’s East Division. The Beavers have also won eight of their last ten games. Weyburn will be off Friday night, before heading off for two road games. They will be in Yorkton Saturday night, and Swift Current on Sunday. The next home game is Tuesday when they host the Moose Jaw MIller Express.
