When the barricades went up to close 5th Avenue North, many were wondering just what was happening. The City of Weyburn stated it was due to work being done for the hospital project, while on social media people were calling out the fact that there was water main work happening along the stretch from 5th Street to Government Road.

It turns out, it is both.

“What the contractor there is doing is they are installing an additional water main,” explained Jennifer Wilkinson. She is the Director of Engineering for the City of Weyburn. “In order for the hospital to ensure they have no interruptions to service, they are doing a loop ore is doing is they are installing an additional water main,” explained Jennifer Wilkinson. She is the Director of Engineering for the City of Weyburn.

This will involve boring in another water main to tie into the hospital so there will be a redundant feed. Then, if there is a water main issue on one of those lines, there will still be a continuous supply of water for the hospital.

The crews were working to get the lines strung out earlier this week, and the digging will be getting underway shortly. The process to get it done will be quite lengthy, with the closure expected to last up to seven weeks.

“October 2nd is our estimated time frame, and then of course that is weather dependent and dependent on the contractor, should they run into any issues or anything,” added Wilkinson.

While the road is closed, local traffic for those who live where 5th Avenue is the only access to their home will be allowed through.
