The 5th Weyburn Scouts will be conducting the second bottle drive of their season this Saturday, January 6th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in order to raise funds for the individual members of their organization. Children taking part in this bottle drive will directly reap the benefits of their labor by receiving the funds they raise to put towards paying for camps, excursions, and equipment. Lise Soles, Scouter with the Weyburn Troop, said that this method of fundraising encourages self-starters to work for the payoff of enjoying activities with the club.

"If they work the bottle drive, they get the money," she explained. "This isn't for the group itself. This actually is directly for the kids to use to help in their own scouting adventures so that they can raise money to pay for items such as their camps, their camping equipment, and their other adventure things."

Weyburnites can expect a knock at the door this Saturday as Scouts make their rounds, collecting recyclables. If any residents would like to contribute to the drive but will not be home on the 6th, then there are other options for making sure your donations make it to the right hands.

"If anyone wants to leave their donations out with a label that just says 'Scouts', we'll do our best to go through the city and collect," shared Soles. "If it doesn't get picked up, you can get a hold of me directly on my cell, or you can pre-text me between now and Saturday to guarantee pickup."

Lise can be contacted to guarantee recyclable pickups for Saturday, or to follow up on a missed pickup, at (306) 861-3467. Funds raised by this drive will greatly assist the newest members of the club as they prepare for several upcoming events.

"Our winter camp is coming up, even without the snow," Soles laughed. "We'll stay in a log cabin and do some winter adventures and some outdoor winter safety and survival skills. We've got a potential camp coming up in the Regina and Moose Jaw area, and in May we are looking at something else that's specific to just the Cubs, the Beavers and the Scouts for them to go on their own adventures."

Those still interested in joining the club, either youth members or adult leaders, are welcome any time of the year. The current session just began with the introduction of January and will run until May with a final campout in June, making now an opportune time for new members to join. The only restrictions that may limit the total number of members would be the number of leaders able to assist with the programming, making these volunteers very valuable to the organization.
