Saskatchewan Minister of Education, Gordon Wyant, has declared the Month of May to be CAA School Safety Patrol Month, and some Weyburn students will get to take part in a fun day to celebrate their participation in the program.

Formerly just one week, the time for recognizing the work of thousands of coordinators, schools, community partners, and participating student patrollers across the province will be spread across the full month of May.

“We really want to applaud and thank and recognize the amazing CAA School Safety Patrollers for the volunteer work they do in their respective school communities, to help their classmates learn more about school zone safety,” said CAA Saskatchewan’s Christine Niemczyk.

She said the program has been going for nearly seventy years.

“We at CAA provide the vests, the stop paddles, the patroller manuals, the co-ordinator manuals, everything they need free-of-charge. Currently we have managed the program since 1951, and we have approximately 4,600 patrollers in 160 schools from 70 Saskatchewan communities,” she said.

Two schools in Weyburn, Haig School and St. Michael School, will be sending delegates for full-day Safety Patrol Jamboree event being held May 6th, which will include hip hop dancing, a scavenger hunt, safety demonstrations and luncheon presentations by Saskatchewanderer, Zane Buchanan.
