The Weyburn Police Service, joined by partnering agencies including the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol, conducted two High-Visibility Checkstops on Wednesday and Saturday of last week, focused on driving sober and drug-free.

"Over 400 vehicles were checked in the two evenings," explained Deputy Chief Brent VanDeSype. "All in all, it went pretty well. But of course we'd like to see zero impaireds or everyone driving drug free."

Many drivers were surprised to receive a small reward provided by SGI, MADD Canada, or one of the many other sponsoring businesses and organizations that support and promote safe driving.

"I mean it's very important to drive sober at all times of the year, but especially when you throw in some winter roads and some other things, I can make driving a little bit unsafe to start with, of course, being impaired just makes it that much more dangerous," he added.

On Wednesday evening, over 150 vehicles were checked resulting in two drivers receiving a driving suspension and having their vehicle impounded after testing positive for the presence of cannabis.

On Saturday evening, over 250 vehicles were checked resulting in one driver being charged for driving while prohibited and possession of property obtained by crime.  That driver was also found to be breaching a condition of their release and have an outstanding warrant for their arrest.

"Nobody wins in this. I mean, it's not worth it for the drivers and just fortunately there was no injuries or no accidents. Otherwise, there could have been far worse consequences."
