December is the month filled with holiday parties. From events with co-workers held after work hours to visiting with friends and family on the weekend, to concerts and more, there is almost always something happening.

With so many activities happening, the Weyburn Police Service is reminding people to be responsible while partaking in holiday cheer. The reminder comes after a few incidents over the past week.

“Officers received a few calls of individuals that overindulged a little bit over the past week,” said Deputy Police Chief Brent VanDeSype, noting they were intoxicated. “One had taken a stumble. EMS was called to treat a minor injury, but all of the incidents were dealt with without any charges.

“If you’re going out and you’re celebrating a little but, make sure you got a safe ride home, and try not to overdo it and put yourself in a situation where you might regret it,” VanDeSype continued.

The Weyburn Police Service is also planning on several check stops during the holiday season. These stops will be to check for driver sobriety and other traffic safety matters. The WPS could also be randomly rewarding sober drivers and designated drivers with a token of appreciation – a gift card courtesy of SGI to promote safe driving.

With cooler temperatures, especially at night and in the early morning hours, many people are starting their vehicles, and letting them warm up. In other instances, people are leaving vehicles running while shopping, or making other stops. Over the past week, the WPS has received a few reports of ne’er-do’wells taking advantage of the opportunity, and rummaging through vehicles, and taking valuables.

“We just like to remind everybody to keep your valuables out of the vehicle, or at least out of sight,” VanDeSype said. “Keep your vehicle locked, and if you do see anything suspicious by way of a vehicle, or a person in an area that you don’t think should be that at that time or place, give us a call. We’ll check it out right away.”
