For many Weyburn residents, there was a little bit of a sticker shock when they opened their monthly water bills. For some, their bills increased sixfold, while others saw a drastic reduction.

The reason?

The City of Weyburn was using estimates during the time the Corix meter installation took place. With the new meters being brought online for all households, the readings are now actual readings reported back by the new meters.

Mathew Warren is the city manager. He explained with the actual readings being the first in over six months, it is compensating for the difference between what was estimated and what was actually used.

To help residents keep an eye on what the water usage is going forward, the city has something in the works, which is expected this spring.

“Once everything is done here, we actually have a water tracking app available for residents,” Warren explained. The app is expected to be available sometime in June.

For those who are finding themselves caught with an extremely high, unexpected water bill, the city is willing to work with residents. To discuss options available, they are urged to contact the City of Weyburn Finance Department.
