When the holiday season kicks off, so does fundraising for the Salvation Army Food Bank.

“I think it's amazing,” said Nicole Strickland, Community Ministries Worker for the Salvation Army. “I'm always amazed at how Weyburn and the surrounding area always come together and support the Salvation Army.”

This year several businesses and local organizations have come together through food drives, cheque presentations, and general fundraising efforts to show their support for those in need in our Community. Golden West Broadcasting was no different, hosting Blow Away Hunger with Great Plains Ford over two days.

By the time Blow Away Hunger wrapped up, there was a truck full of food plus $6,500 in donations.

“That is amazing,” said Strickland. “That goes very far. I mean that helps us buy milk, butter, and perishable items that we have to buy weekly and can't always stockpile. So that's where that money is great for.”

Of course, the fundraiser couldn’t have been a success without the help of the community and many making donations shared stories with our team celebrating friendship and helping those in need.

“Normally we hear the same thing especially this time of year when people are enjoying time with their family and friends and enjoying good food and fellowship. They like to give and hope that other people are doing the same as them.”

We were also given the opportunity to give back to the community by awarding one donator with a brand new snowblower. Our winner, Melanie Graham, was very excited to be the winner and walk away with her first-ever snowblower.

With more fundraising still coming over the next few days, Strickland said she was overwhelmed by the community support.

“I can’t get over the amount of food that has come in our door this holiday season,” she said. “It’s amazing how much Weyburn has supported the Salvation Army this year.”
