Demolition will begin soon on the old Soo Theatre building in Weyburn.

Ryan Janke with the Weyburn Community Cooperative Theatre Project board said while they were able to complete asbestos abatement during the winter, they are excited to finally be able to tear down the old building to make way for a new one.

"The weather has not been cooperating with us this winter and to be honest, it still isn't. But rain or snow or shine, we're going to be starting demolition before the 1st of May. It's a little bit up in the air right now, just coordinating some of the last things, but May 1st would be the last possible day we'll start," he shared.

He said they'll be announcing some more exciting things soon. "Keep your eyes on Discover Weyburn and we'll be making them as soon as we can."

The Weyburn Community Cooperative Theatre Project group was formed in recent years after the old theatre shut down in 2018 due to facility issues.

Weyburn can look forward to a two-screen theatre, which will be completely community owned and operated.

Adair's Demolition & Excavating, the same company that was hired by the SECPSD to tear down the old Souris School, is handling the demolition.
