Students from Grades Seven, Eight, and Nine at Weyburn Comprehensive School have been working hard to learn their lines and songs for the Junior Musical performances being held from November 21st to 23rd.

Band Teacher Brayden Jensen said it's going to be Disney's 'Newsies'.

"It's set in 1899 in in New York and it's all of the paper deliverers, back to the days of the printing press and typewriters and all the paper deliverers end up on strike," he explained. "So it follows them through that with a bunch of comedic characters."

He said the show is a lot of fun and the music is great.

"That's why we decided to pick this one. The music is good and you'll be leaving humming those songs in your head," said Jensen.

For those who are unfamiliar with the songs, you can watch the movie of the Broadway musical on Disney Plus.

While auditions and casting were completed in September, the students have been rehearsing Tuesdays and Wednesdays after school, and even sometimes Thursdays, and Jensen said it's coming together.

Some of the performers from last year's Junior Musical, 'Frozen' are part of the ensemble, as well as some new faces. While the Senior Musical is two acts, the Junior Musical is only one act, keeping to about an hour for the whole show. Also in contrast to the Senior Musical, which features the sheet music being performed by a live pit band, the Junior Musical features a soundtrack to accompany the live voices.

Public performances will be at 7:00 p.m. on November 21st, 22nd, and 23rd.

"We'll be inviting some students from Legacy Park, Assiniboia Park, and St. Michael School over for our dress rehearsal on the afternoon of of the 21st."

Tickets are available at the WCS office or at the door. Adults get in for $15, students and seniors for $10, with children under five years free with the parent or guardian.

Jensen said it's going to be a great all-audience show, and that he's hoping to get lots of people out to see it.

"The kids always react well when there's large and receptive audiences, and the kids are excited. The lines are getting memorized and working on some choreography. They're making progress for sure."
